How I start coloring a page (Imagimorphia)

I started this WIP (work in progress) with a lot of hares and mushrooms from Imagimorphia by Kerby Rosanes yesterday afternoon. I got this idea to show and tell what I do before I start coloring a new page and how I start adding the color.

When I have a clear picture of what I want in my head, then I always start out by planning my colors like you see on the picture, I take good look at my color charts and then I find all the colors that I want to use. Then I start putting them together like this and write down the names and brands.
I call my Polychromos for P, Coloursoft for C, Marco Metallic for Marco M and Marco Raffines for Marco R.

After I've planned my colors, I start coloring. I always color one thing at a time. Here you see that I started with all the small mushrooms, and I'll continue with the bigger mushrooms in a bit. Then I'm quite sure I'll color all the green things like grass and leaves. Then the hares and at last all the doodles like snails and stuff.

I think I might be a bit more organised and systematic than most colorists, but it really helps me in saving some time, because I don't have to stop coloring all the time to pick out the next color I'm going to use.

How do you do when you start a new coloring page?

  1. Great post! The times I've done this my coloring is also more expeditec, however not always the clear image appear in my head, and when that happens it takes me too much to decided how I will like to paint it. But overall is a very good practice. Thank for sharing =D

    1. Thank you! I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who does this :P does it take longer to decide, because you want it to be absolutely perfect? Because that's when it takes ages for me :)
